Mock Rock Coming Feb. 7th

Tickets Go On Sale Jan. 23rd

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) announced that tickets for 2012 Mock Rock were available for sale to the public starting Monday, Jan. 23rd. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at Hill Auditorium, with doors opening at 7 p.m.

Tickets will be available for purchase in person by cash or check only at the U-M Athletics Ticket Office, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and at the Ross Academic Center on Sunday, Feb. 5, from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 for all U-M students, $12 for advance general admission, and $15 for general admission when purchased from the Hill Auditorium box office on the night of the event.

Mock Rock is a student-athlete variety show featuring skits from many of the U-M varsity and club athletics teams. The event, coordinated by SAAC, will benefit the Child and Family Life program of the U-M C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washtenaw County (BBBS), and Student Athletes Leading Social Change (SALSC). In 2011, Mock Rock raised upwards of $86,000, with this year's goal to raise $100,000.

Individuals wishing to support the student-athletes and the three causes may purchase tickets or donate online on SAAC's Mock Rock website. More information about the organizations benefiting from the funds raised can also be found on this site.

This year's Mock Rock chairs are Melisa Ongun (rowing), Claire Ivry (water polo), Ariel Piotter (rowing) and Meg Bellino(women's cross country).

What Goes Around.........Comes Around

It's not just the hype anymore. The 'new' arrogance of the Spartans is starting to leave a 'ring' around the college basketball world that just may not survive the season.

We saw it last Saturday when the green-and-white fans were clapping and jeering the Wolverines after the loss to Iowa - only to be usurped in their climactic upset by Northwestern.

Who would have thought? Certainly not the Maize 'n Blue Crew who displayed some character and played a clean game and survived the furious rally attempt by State.

The Wolverines defense held the Spartans to a season-low 59 points, highlighted by the final 4:21 of the game without a Spartan field goal.

Michigan will travel to Arkansas on Saturday to play a non-conference game against the Razorbacks. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. and we'll all be here at CUBS' AC snarfing down some great food watching the game on the big screens which will be televised nationally on CBS.

Well......the sports world focus takes us to Cleveland, Ohio this Sunday, and it looks like Mother Nature has finally delivered snow just in time to make it a memorable excursion into Buckeye territory.

The Michigan Wolverines will go for the sweep after winning Friday night in Columbus and play the second of a two game weekend hockey series against Ohio State at Progressive Field - the new home of the MLB Cleveland Indians - tomorrow (Sunday) in a first-ever clash billed as
"The Frozen Diamond Faceoff."

We'll be here at CUBS' A.C. at 5:00pm eager to see the action on the BIG SCREENS around the Club, while enjoying the things you can't get in Cleveland on a cold blustery afternoon with your face reddened from Lake Erie - namely the Garden Pizza and a few of the Big Eleven Burgers. Too bad that we all can't go - but the important thing is...

Michigan Wins in O.T.

Denard Robinson had a rough night with his famed ground game, but threw 2 TD passes to get the win.

You could hear a pin drop in East Lansing.

The Spartans were desperate (again) to be the only saving grace in the B1G conference with visions of greatness dancing in their tiny heads. But the Michigan Wolverines Motto - "Those Who Stay Will Be Champions" proved true blue and defeated a gritty Virginia Tech team Tuesday night in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

William Gholston must have missed that memo.

This is NOT the Award from the Bedpan Bowl.

Truth be known, that is actually the Old Brass Spittoon. (Imagine how that thing smells after 87 years) This is a treasured prize from the annual MSU-Indiana contest, which has been sitting in East Lansing since Teddy Roosevelt was President.

You all remember 'The Gholster.' He was the one penalized by the NCAA for a whole 1 game for screwing the head off of Wolverine Quarterback Denard Robinson and shoving him further into the Sparty turf, not to mention other totally super-human gestures and chest-beating movements.

But that was only one of his TWO personal fouls from that game.

So.........Here's to you, Mr. Spartan-Like-No-Other-Spartan.

You'll lose Kirk 'The Whiner' Cousins next year and all 4 of the top receivers. And you'll lose Kevin Pickelmen and presumably Jerel Worthy to the NFL draft. But have no fear!! William Gholston is only a sophomore, and we think he'll be back. Lucky you.

Penn State University has fired both President Graham Spanier and Joe Paterno effective immediately. We know that. (*Portions here are repeated from earlier posts)

He still doesn't get it. A Leader of Men? No - he may
claim to be a "friend" of Jerry Sandusky. He worked for a "noble"
cause, huh? Protecting young boys?? What from??
Boy Scout Leaders and Priests, I guess.

There is a very, very painful and disturbing account to read from the Grand Jury Report made available Thursday (click here) and it almost makes you want to cry.

Not convinced?? Here is a Timeline showing repeated abuses and confirmed Police, District Court and other legal authorities' actions spanning 1977 to the Present.

In afterthought, you have to take what is said verbatim. Word for word. Joe Paterno thought he was protecting a "friend?" Joe is not accountable?? He did everything he was required to do???

A Friend would have helped his Friend get help. Joe Paterno did not do that. Joe Paterno thinks he is so powerful that his beliefs are bigger than reality or truth or justice. Joe Paterno has a better grip on Right and Wrong than mere mortal men.

JoePa does not get it. He turned his back on moral decency and has said that he wants to wait for the criminal prosecution for the facts to come out. Hogwash. IF Mr. Paterno were not so "high and mighty" as he thinks, and all of those rioting Penn State students who turned over vans and brought out riot Police maintained - they would be spitting on his grave, too. But no, they gets "hugs" and tears from Mrs. Paterno.

If I were a PSU Student and I touched either of the Paternos anywhere on the skin I would be getting a test for Tuberculosis or Yellow fever at the Clinic. Post haste.

There are people you meet in your life who are like that. I've met mine. There may be more. But I can sleep at night and I can live with myself. Rot in Hell, Joe Paterno.

Thank the Good Lord that we are Michigan Wolverines.

Columbus Wins it's 1st Game 4-1 on Wings

A save. One of the the 28 Troy Conklin had before being pulled.
Only problem is - there were 31 shots. The 4th goal was open net.

A few of the Red Wings players said," We were not prepared. "
Duh.

The winless Columbus Blue Jackets welcomed suspended Defenseman James Wisniewski (from Canton, MI) back from an 8-game suspension and proceeded to make fools out of our beloved Detroit Red Wings.

This is not the way to run a railroad. This way would not even run a bad Tupperware^® Party.

Attitude. That is the key. Attitude. I repeat. Speaking of which - there better be a well prepared attitude this coming Saturday for Homecoming because the Purdue Boilermakers are not sleeping off a hangover, either. The Wolverines need to get their attitude back because they will get a rude awakening if they don't get it together again.

'Old Ann Arbor Town' is ready and so are the staff at CUBS' AC, who are busy getting prepared for the onslaught of returning Alums making their annual pilgrimage back Home. We'll have a plate or two of mouth-watering Beef Stroganoff waiting for 'Ya!

Kyle Vanden Bosch can't believe it. Neither can we.

There's no place like Home. So we better get 'outta here and make an attitude adjustment.

The final score was not so bad. But that makes it look like a lot closer game than it actually was. We hate to say that. The Detroit Lions quite frankly were beaten on all 3 sides of the ball (Ed. I didn't make that up - somebody in E. Lansing, did.)

So we'll join the ranks of early season Wannabees and take our place in line. Let's see if there is indeed reason to be proud up there in Freeland, Michigan** (in Saginaw County) which just happens to be the most frequent visitor to this Blog. (!!?!!)

It's Homecoming Week, after all. We've got to put on our best possible face and tidy up around here. Visitors are coming, you know. If you would care for a guaranteed power "pick-me-up" you should stop into CUBS' AC and hunker down on the Chef's Special of the Week - a Mayor Patrick Primanti Sandwich - which happens to be honoring another sports joint in Pittsburgh. (?)

Saturday Night's Incredible Upset

An Amazingly Exciting Night of College Football

Alex Torres had THREE touchdown catches in this
41-38 upset of #3 ranked Oklahoma.

Things were actually quiet around Ann Arbor on Saturday. It was a gorgeous autumn day around campus and then the evening became equally rewarding as we enjoyed seeing 2 of the top 5 ranked teams in college football upset. There were a lot of great games and the only problem was deciding which one to watch!

Down in Norman, Oklahoma Texas Tech Red Raider QB Seth Doege threw for 441 yards to accomplish something that only 3 teams have done in the past 78 games under Coach Bob Stopes. Not to mention, the visitors were 30-point underdogs and this was not expected to be much of a contest. Texas Tech dominated a Sooners team that was expected to vie for the National Championship. The Miami Hurricanes upset the Georgia Tech Bulldogs and of course we can't forget to mention the Orangemen of Syracuse who topped the West Virginia Mountaineers Friday night to start our heads spinning.

In the newly aligned B1G there were also surprises coming out in West Lafayette as the Purdue Boilermakers, next weekend's Homecoming opponent for the Maize 'n Blue, trounced a highly touted Illinois squad. In Evanston the Penn State Nittany Lions kept their perfect record intact as they defeated a strong Northwestern Wildcats team 34-24.

So....all of the action will be in A² next weekend as the Wolverines host the Purdue Boilermakers for Homecoming. We know things will be busy around town. And remember, if you are not already settled on finding a parking spot we'll have one here at CUBS' AC waiting for you.

Michigan State Continues to Promote Thug Mentality

A very bad example of sportsmanship. Former NFL VP of Officiating
Mike Pereira said he would have ejected him after those 2 personal fouls.

It's bad enough that emotions run high in this in-state rivalry and produce emotional over-reactions on both teams. But when one school literally endorses bad behavior - even cultivates it - it becomes a serious flaw that needs attention. I'm talking psychological attention, not just censure and/or suspension. It's almost a criminal matter. **Update: Click Here

Sure, there are those who say that the Wolverines are only sore losers and whine about whatever it is they can muster in childish defense. But if you watch how the Michigan Wolverines behaved on the field compared to the MSU Spartans, you can see why young athletes are going to line up with the "heroes" of their personal choice based upon what it is that inspires them to play in the first place.

Is it OK to needlessly twist an opposing players head by the facemask in an obvious attempt to inflict physical damage? That would be considered alright by MSU standards, just as it would be to those youngsters who have already served at WJ Maxey Boys School after pushing their Grandmother down the stairs in a wheelchair.

We don't have to mention that the Spartans had a week off to prepare for this contest. But they did not have to spend that time practicing to become goons. This was a tasteless example of unsportsmanlike conduct which is truthfully not the kind of "hero" image we want our youth to aspire to.

And for the record, though we knew those Nike "Pro" uniforms were going to be revealed at this particular game on purpose, we should not turn our heads on the workers who produced them in Asia, where they were beaten if management saw a "bad" attitude.

What goes around comes around. And this weekend I think the Spartans are going to receive something up the back door chute that they cannot prepare for this time.........

Red Wings Stay Perfect!!

Detroit Wins in OT 3-2

Devin Setoguchi was set to return to Santa's Workshop as Head Elf, but
he got a job with the Minnesota Wild instead.

You know the Holidays are approaching fast when one team plays against "Video Game Characters" in East Lansing, one plays against a team testing the "Home Batting Practice Machine" all night (and still wins) in Arlington, Texas and yet another plays well (at least) against several "Former Santa's Elves" at The Joe.

Fortunately for us, the closest of the three games was a lot more entertaining, as the Detroit Red Wings came back from a 2-0 deficit and defeated the Minnesota Wild in overtime later on Saturday. This victory maintains the Red Wings unbeaten in the regular season and atop the standings in the NHL Western Conference with the only perfect record. (BTW: Jimmy Howard keeps the Wings with the lowest GA in the league.)

The seasons are changing around these parts and the weather is about to reveal why we still Love to live in a place where the world looks like a playground amusement park. (Though some days, like yesterday, were not all that much fun.)

There is a lot left to do and there is a chance to regain that giddy happiness we had up until the end of the 3rd quarter.

We are going to stop into CUBS' AC and devour a Philly Cheese Steak Pizza (with all the appropriate calories therein) and wash it down with a frosty beverage.

We wished for the Spirit of Mickey Lolich and we got it. Many of you younger readers may not know this: Mickey Lolich was the 1968 World Series MVP because he allowed just 5 runs in 3 games and that propelled the Detroit Tigers from a 3-1 deficit to beat Cy Young winner Bob Gibson and the St. Louis Cardinals.

A bowl of Korean vegetables is all the Detroit Tigers amount to if they don't win
the next THREE games against Texas. That's a TALL order........

It's been a fun (albeit weird) ride. Do the statisticians predict the Detroit Tigers are going to the World Series this year? Do you remember what they were saying back in 1968? The Tigers were down 3-1 and Mickey Lolich brought Detroit back from the dead.

All due respect to our Korean friends here in Ann Arbor (and everywhere else for that matter) but whoever uttered the phrase "Deep Kimchi" (likely a US soldier) had it right.

I never thought I would be saying this - but I hope it rains Thursday and the Tigers go out to Arlington and perform brain surgery on the Texas Rangers and then come back to clinch the AL pennant right here in Detroit. That would please us just fine.

Sleeping bats? Knucklehead defense? Take a break and consider what needs to be done and do it. While you are at it, come on into CUBS' A.C. - sit down - grab a plate of Sweet Baby Ray's Chicken Salad and we'll talk about it.

Detroit Takes ALCS Game Three 5-2

Unlike Babe Ruth, Miguel Cabrera points to the stands after he hits
a home run and not before. But he does "rub it in" a little........

We were all starting to get frustrated with watching our guys squander so many opportunities and what appeared as a Texas team that had figured out our 2 best pitchers.

But the Detroit Tigers and their bats showed up to play once they came back to Comerica Park Tuesday night. The only tragic thing is: If Detroit does in fact win the AL Pennant, it won't be here at home.

We'll get over it. We'll have a World Series to deal with.

As far as the next games are concerned, we've got strange starting times for the next two - 4:19pm in the afternoon. What's up with that?

OK. We'll settle for Happy Hour and maybe a late lunch (or an early dinner) and watch the game at CUBS' AC on the big screens while chowing down on a house favorite, the Pepperoni Twists. Delightful.......

A called balk was the least of the Tigers troubles Tuesday night.

We are at the point where our hunches take over proper reasoning.

There is nothing wrong with a little bravado, but when it goes to your head it starts to smell bad. The Detroit Tigers need to stick to fundamentals and that starts with stopping the stupid errors. On both sides.

We expected Yankee starter A.J. Burnett to struggle. What we got was Granderson. We expected Alburquerque to wave a magic wand and what we got was 6 NY runs in the 8th inning. Throw in a Jeter double and the game started shooting away.

So it's "gut time" in the Bronx on Thursday.

I've got another hunch, though.

We'll be at CUBS' AC watching the action on the big screens to see if I am right. We'll have a tasty and delightful Cajun Pasta Dinner waiting for you and a frosty beverage, too. I promise it won't smell bad.

It has been a wet trip to New York City. But the Detroit Tigers are coming HOME and the weather is going to be near perfect. We hope.

A quick trip back home and the ALDS continues at Comerica Park Monday night at 8:37pm. Where are YOU going to be?? If you are not going downtown you can join a great group of loyal fans at CUBS' A.C. and watch game three with us on the big screens. We also have several table-side monitors if you prefer to control the action on your own.

Many are saying that Minnesota was not much of a challenge. Just because they did not have a winning record coming in?? I looked at the players and the skills they displayed (and the coach). They did not come to Ann Arbor thinking they were going to just lay down. This was for The Little Brown Jug, after all.
Admittedly, things are going to get a lot tougher, but we feel here that it is fitting to remark about improvements in all the phases of play displayed by the Michigan Wolverines. The Big Ten is taking shape.
Next on the Agenda is Northwestern, who barely lost to a heralded Illini squad and actually controlled most of the game Saturday. Michigan State stuffed the Buckeyes giving them 2 losses already, something which they have not seen since 2004. Wisconsin will be a force to be reckoned with after showing the Huskers what the B1G is all about. That means there are only 3 undefeated teams left after 5 games.
So we'll take this as a positive. We don't expect the team to settle back to relax and stop from working hard. Next week is going to be the first road game for the Maize 'n Blue - Guess What?!? We are having a Tailgate Party at CUBS' AC. Don't miss it!!

Detroit Looks to Gotham City

An elated team of Rays celebrate a comeback victory over the Tigers
next foe - the New York Yankees.

We needed Batman in Detroit last night. You know what? He didn't show.

Instead, the Tigers are going to travel to New York and take on the Bronx Bombers in the first round of a best-of-five series in the ALCS Friday night.

The surging Tampa Bay Rays capped an MLB Record season-ending streak, knocking off those same Yankees 8-7 in a 12 inning, walk-off homer clash that completed a sweep and sent the outside bettors sky high. They are crying out loud in Bean Town, for sure.

The same thing happened in the National League. There will be no playoff tiebreaker now. Everybody knows who and where they are going in the post-season at this point.

Detroit won out over the Indians in the regular season finale with a sweep at Comerica Park Wednesday night. But the noise is only just now starting to get louder. Here is a very handy playoff schedule for you.

We'll be at CUBS' A.C. watching all of the action on the big screens as usual. It will be a great weekend in Ann Arbor. Remember to try out some of the good things on our Low Carb Menu.

We are getting used to this. Tuesday night was another filled with hits all over the park. There were 24 total hits between the two teams, and plenty of emotion and gutsy play. Throw in a couple bobbled balls, too. Isn't it nice to enjoy watching baseball again?

There is only one game left before the playoffs for the Tigers and it is going to be Wednesday night at Comerica Park (weather permitting) starting at 7:05pm. What's going to be on your plate for the evening?

The nights are getting cooler and the days are getting shorter, but the wizards in the CUBS' AC kitchen are still at it concocting some scrumptious delights for all of us to enjoy. We'll all be here watching the baseball game on the big screens and feeling good about ourselves because we are going to be eating healthy things from the CUBS' Low Carb Menu!!

Detroit Routs Cleveland 14-0

A playoff ready bunch of happy Tigers welcomes Delmon Young back to the dugout after he hits a 3-run homer in the 8th inning.

We were thinking that maybe the Detroit Tigers were going to take it easy going into the playoffs next week. After all, several backup players were in the starting lineup - Kelly, Dirks, Raburn, Rhymes and Santiago - but that didn't stop the offense from cruising, anyway.

We probably should not call them backups, really. They are Tigers after all, and they are a Team to be reckoned with.

Doug Fister won his 8th decision for the Tigers since arriving in July from Seattle and has earned his #2 spot in the upcoming playoff pitching rotation by serving up a 1.80 ERA in the process. He threw 109 pitches in 8 innings of shut-out ball and 81 of them were strikes.

There are two games yet to play in the regular season and we are keeping the seats warm at CUBS' AC for our regulars who come in to see ALL the games on the big screens. We'll be here again Tuesday evening when Max Scherzer takes the mound while savoring a ⅓ pound Patty Melt Sandwich from the kitchen and enjoying a beverage. Or two.

Actor Peter Weller leads Tiger Fans during the 7th inning "stretch" in singing
"Take Me Out to the Ballgame" Friday night. He is better known to Detroiters
as RoboCop - parts of which were filmed in the Motor City.

And it was a night to remember.

True Blue Wolverines, U of M students, alumni, fans, and friends joined the Tigers for "Wolverines in the D" last night to benefit the Pat Maloy Scholarship at the School of Kinesiology.

How fitting to have RoboCop there, eh?

The Tigers played an inspired and quite powerful offense from Baltimore and it was not decided until Victor Martinez doubled and drove in Brandon Inge to cap the win.

The series continues tonight and Detroit waits to see who they will play in the ALCS as Texas and Boston are both jockeying position.

BUT - Today is MICHIGAN WOLVERINE FOOTBALL and we are not going to forget to say........

London, ON (Sports Network) - Ian White scored the game-winning goal in a shootout as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-3, in preseason action.

Darren Helm, Valtteri Filppula and White netted the three goals for the Red Wings during regulation.

Ty Conklin started and Jordan Pearce finished in net for Detroit.

James van Riemsdyk scored twice, while Wayne Simmonds tallied a game-tying goal with 53 seconds left for the Flyers to send the game into overtime.

Michael Leighton started in net for Philadelphia and stopped 38-of-41 shots.

center-right and the faces in Chicago looked like their last dog died.

What a week we are having in THE State of Michigan¹. A completely amazing one. That's for sure.

Jim Leyland is starting to look like an incredible Genius. We had to chuckle in the bottom of the 10th with 2 out as he obviously was making fun of the White Sox when he made an overt bunt signal on the dugout steps toward Jose Valverde. What a hoot!

It looked shaky right up until the 8th and most of us felt it could not last forever, anyway. But the Tigers pulled out another trick from their magic bag and stuck it to Ozzie Guillen. But good. Even Carlos Guillen contributed a home run to this beauty.

The Tigers have now won 22 of their last 26 games and 21 out of 27 against the Chicago White Sox, alone. The jinx is really over.

Detroit goes far out west tonight to play the Oakland Athletics and we'll be at CUBS' AC taking it in on the big screens until midnight, at least. The way things are going in THE State of Michigan¹ you never know what is going to happen next! If you need some stability in your life you can depend on CUBS' AC and enjoy some good eatin'.

Make That 11 In-a-Row

Everything's coming up elevens. Well.........not exactly. But there are 11 wins in-a-row for the Tigers over division rivals and 11 wins in-a-row for Justin Verlander. (JV has 23 wins total) That streak of wins for Detroit is the longest of any MLB team this year. The Detroit Tigers are playing astonishing baseball.

The Tigers easily beat the "once feared" Chicago White Sox again Tuesday night and that means the last game this afternoon will decide if the record between them this year is 12 or 13 wins out of 16 games. Detroit is sitting 24 games above .500 - we could not say that even a month ago.

The American League Championship Series tickets went on sale at Comerica Park (and on-line, of course) on Monday. If you think that is a bit premature consider that Detroit is now 12½ games ahead of the next nearest team(s) in the standings and there are only 14 games left in the regular season and 8 of those are out of the division, meaning the others will play each other down. Detroit needs only to win 4 of those and/or whoever is in 2nd place can't possibly lose any more than 4. It truly is now safe to say we're in!

Since today's game starts at 2:10pm local time it makes a great opportunity to take a late lunch or leave early for the day and come join us at CUBS' AC and watch the game on the big screens. Why not come out and try a Wolverine while you're at it!!

Detroit Mauls White Sox 14-4 on Monday

Ryan Raburn scorched Chicago for 4 hits to lead Detroit
to a 14-4 good 'ol fashioned whuppin' of the White Sox.

They are coming out of nowhere, it seems. Take Ryan Raburn for example. Do you know he has been a Detroit Tiger, and only a Detroit Tiger, since 2004? Did you know he has played every infield position except Shortstop and every outfield post?

Well.......get to know him now. Jim Leyland never did anything but pay attention. Ryan Raburn accounted for 3 RBI's (as did Jhonny Peralta) and homered in his first at-bat, which was a back-to-back 'tater following Peralta's 2-run blast. Whew!

In support of starter Rick Porcello, the Detroit Tigers totalled 21 hits including the 2 home runs (as well as 5 doubles) and then executed 2 beautiful double-plays on defense for the icing on the cake.

This string of wins (a season best) comes at exactly the right time, and the rest of the baseball world is taking notice. The Tigers have now won 10-in-a-row (better than the Phillies have done) and their lead in the AL Central Division grows to 11½ games - their largest this year. The Tigers are setting new records and taking names.......

Can they do it again? What are the odds? Come into CUBS' AC Tuesday evening at 8:10pm and join us in watching the game on the big screens while we wrap our lips around a Ranch Chicken Wrap.

Actually, it was nearly a perfect weekend. All of the major teams in the State of Michigan won their respective contests, except Central Michigan University. This is the first time since Sept. 30, 2007 that the Tigers and the Lions won on the same day.

That's right! The Wolverines, Spartans, Tigers, Lions, Eagles and Broncos all were winners!

Of course, the highlight will be the big win by the University of Michigan Wolverines over the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. We are not going to forget that one, and neither will a lot of other people.

But Sunday was different. It was the 10th anniversary of the tragedies of September 11th, 2001. Observations were underway around the country, but none more glorious than those held in downtown Detroit. There were no long speeches (thankfully) but occasionally a gospel song or a rousing rendition of the Stars and Stripes Forever.

The Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1 for their 9th straight win. All against division rivals. This stretched their lead to 10½ games in the standings, and has all but locked up the title for Detroit. Cleveland knocked off Chicago and that means another double-dip for the Tigers Magic Number, which is now 7.

Detroit travels to the Windy City for the final 3 game series between them on Monday, and Rick Porcello will be on the mound. The game starts at 8:10pm, and we'll all be at CUBS' AC taking in the action on the big screens while snarfing down a house special - the Sweet Baby's Ray's Burger.

Saturday in Ann Arbor

This has never been done before...........

Don't get me wrong.........there ARE skeptics out there.

We've heard from the Georgia Bulldogs "blog-hauncho" that this is a bunch of wasted hype and probably the worst game of the week. This supports the premise that ESPN and most of the sports journalism world are Dyslexic.

We don't make many judgements here - we are merely cheerleaders. (Lucky for us, however, we actually have something to cheer about.)

So bring it on.

While you are at it, consider stopping by CUBS' AC and getting "primed" for the events of one of the greatest Saturdays in the history of Ann Arbor. The parking lot is open at 10:00am, and there will be a bunch of folk watching ALL of the football games the whole day on the big screens.

Tigers Pull the Hat-Trick in Cleveland

Tigers Complete Sweep in Cleveland's Own Sandbox

A very relieved Justin Verlander hugs Victor Martinez after

To be perfectly honest - we were not feeling as giddy as we were Tuesday night after getting so many runs and hits - but then again, we were 0 for 12 Wednesday afternoon backing Justin Verlander and already and looking for a miracle.

It was not looking so comfortable - that with the persistent drizzle which ran the whole game - and with Cleveland 1st baseman Shelley Duncan smacking two 2-run home runs off of the "Ace" we had reason to squirm a little. (force of habit)

Then, Victor Martinez showed up on cue. He hit his second career Grand Slam against his former team and turned the game around in the 7th inning. Detroit comes back to win 8-6.

So the Detroit Tigers scored a hat-trick. They swept the Indians 3-in-a-row and left town with a 9 game lead in the AL Central standings. Not at all bad for Detroit. That is two series and two sweeps in 6 days over division rivals. Not at all what any of the mathematically possible challengers wanted to see. The Minnesota Twins chimed in late to beat the White Sox which helped add a tick to the countdown.* Baseball Prospectus puts the odds of Detroit taking the crown at 98.3% now.

Thursday is a day off for the Tigers, but that does not mean the kitchen is slowing down! Those wizards of wonderful culinary works are at it getting ready for this Saturday. Notre Dame is coming to A² and we'll all be getting hyped up over ESPN College GameDay™ and Desmond Howard (and that great-looking chick) and the Michigan Woverines and that is why the Black & Bleu Burger is on Special!

expressions on the Indians faces told the whole story.

Luigi Galvani didn't know anything about the Tigers at the time, so he just invented a method for shocking fans' legs. ☍ His discovery and work later led to Alessandro Volta assaulting the first battery. But it wasn't until André Ampere proved that parallel currents lying in proximity of one another Ꮸ could cross home plate repeatedly, despite the fact that inventor George Ohm (Ω) was wearing an Indians' uniform and resisting it as best as he possibly could.

(I think my Grandmother could have won this one, to be honest.) By the middle of the second inning the score was already 8-0 Detroit and you could hear a pin drop at Progressive Field. Not even the Tom-Tom guy was banging his drum, anymore. ☹

Speechless. In Cleveland, that is. After pushing the White Sox through the ropes last weekend and raising hope for the Indians, the Tigers proceed to do the same to Cleveland and can repeat their sweeping success today with another win to close out the series. It was a day to relax and enjoy. There were people at work, however. Those would be the Detroit Tigers.

Cleveland was hoping to close the gap on the lead that Detroit has built in the American League Central Division, and they threw their best at our own Doug Fister, but he and the Tiger bats had different plans. Detroit is a clear 7½ games ahead now and the Tigers Magic Number took a combo shot going down to №16. We are really starting to feel good about the postseason, now.

If you watched the game at CUBS' AC you could see the look on Ubaldo Jimenez' face and you thought that ball was going faster than 93mph. But then, our own Doug Fister was more like Muhammad Ali and a butterfly and his 13 strikeouts proved it.

The Tigers have won 5 straight against the Indians starting August 19th with the sweep at Comerica Park and after Monday's game they are 7-6 this season with them. This could not come at a better time and this is starting to close the door.

The Odds Makers are now saying that Detroit has a 98.1% chance to make the playoffs, and with the fact that New York has already clinched at least the wild card this means the division crown, too.

We are at it again Tuesday evening, only this time we plan on digging into a Black & Bleu Burger while watching the game on the big screens and enjoying a beverage. Or two.

Bewitched, Bothered, Blown Away

When the Chicago White Sox came into the Motor City last Friday they were 5½ games out of first and looking to spoil the Tigers' party. Boy, did they ever get this series wrong. Detroit had already won Friday 8-1, then came back from 8-1 down to rally Saturday and then Sunday night they were leading 22-0 at the top of the 9th inning and finally gave up 2 mercy runs to a confused bunch of Chicago players. Now the White Sox are 8½ games out and worrying more about getting a tee time than seeing any part of the post-season. According to Baseball Prospectus.com - Chicago now has only a 3.1% chance of making the playoffs, and that's only if the Tigers implode.

Max Scherzer pitched some of his career best ball Sunday night, and the prevailing mood must have been contagious. In fact, the entire starting lineup had at least 1 hit, and the pinch-hitters (3) and designated hitter were the only ones without. The Tigers had a season-best 24 hits overall. Scherzer struck out the side in the 3rd and had 7 scoreless innings giving up only 5 hits and walking none.

Let's talk about RBI's. Miguel Cabrera was hurt scoring on a slide in the 6th, already having 4 to his credit, and then Andy Dirks came in and proceeded to get 4 of his own after that. Jhonny Peralta went 2 for 4 and had 3. Alex Avila had 4 hits - a career high - and had 2 RBI's. We wonder what the score would have been if the Tigers had not left 23 men on base!!

This was the 2nd biggest blowout of the MLB season. Michael Rosenberg of the Free Press^® said," In the 6th inning the White Sox lobbied to have the game called on account of lightning, and there wasn't any. " Ha!!

It's a quick trip to Progressive Field in Cleveland for Detroit Monday afternoon and they start a 3 game series against the Indians who are in 2nd place 6½ games back. Doug Fister will be on the mound for the Tigers going against Ubaldo Jimenez, and we'll be here at CUBS' AC because today is LABOR DAY and we are going to have some fun!! The Wolverines got off to a slow start - not even with a score until the 2nd quarter - but they made up for it with what must have been a lively halftime locker-room "The Team" speech. Now in Detroit..............the Tigers were making magic themselves. How about one of the biggest come-back victories of the baseball season?!? Down 8-1 and Ozzie Guillen smacking his lips. Pop! Pull that out and don't choke. They must be crying in the Windy City. Detroit was suffering after Chicago started piling on runs and they were not exactly pretty. Leyland was livid when a throw to first by Avila was called an error. That was questionable.

But make no mistake. These Detroit Tigers are for real. How about 15 hits and 4 home runs? It is already Sept. 4th and Detroit is now sporting a 6½ game lead in the AL Central standings as Cleveland lost as well.

So what are your options? It's Labor Day weekend. You probably don't have to work on Monday unless you are in the hospitality business or you have a government job where you can sleep at your desk. But the choice is clear. (You come to Colonial Lanes, duh) Sunday will be a day to recover from all of the great sports Saturday, but we still want more! A Special Night at Comerica Park in Detroit

Tigers Tip Chicago 8-1

A Special Night is what Justin Verlander had. He had a shutout going into
the 8th inning and wound up giving Leyland his 500th win in Detroit.

I had it all wrong. I expected a "Pitchers Duel" and all we saw was grace in motion. Justin Verlander won his 21st game of the season - a MLB Best - and Detroit snapped a prevailing win streak by the White Sox in very big style.

Justin Verlander allowed 1 run in 7⅓ innings and struck out 6. Up until the 8th there was only one man in scoring position for Chicago. That is what you call control. This was special for several reasons - Jim Leyland got his 500^th win as a Tiger manager plus this has pretty much cemented the Cy Young Award for Justin Verlander.

Let's not take anything away from the great defensive plays the Tigers displayed tonight - notably the great snag by Ramon Santiago and the beautiful run-down by Magglio Ordoñez.

This puts the White Sox another game back behind the Tigers at 6½ and with the Indians beating KC it pushes Chicago back into 3rd place, so even with the win the Tigers lead in the AL Central stayed at 5½. Detroit is 8-5 against Chicago so far this year and there are 5 games yet to play against each another.

The Tigers Magic Number is now №21.

It's going to be a tough choice to make Saturday.
Just about everyone in A² is going to be concentrating on the Maize 'n Blue, but these two baseball teams - entering into the final stretch of the pennant race - face each other again at 4:10pm. We'll have it on a screen somewhere at CUBS' AC. If you can find a seat.

Santiago Walk-Off Puts Detroit Back in the "W"

You've gotta like the little guy. He has done this already once this year - come off the bench and win the game for the Tigers in one swing of the bat, that is. It came at the right time.

Doug Fister had a no-hitter going into the 7th. Hopes were high and he was looking masterful. Then, Alex Gordon who is hitting .305 stepped in and hits a double. Kansas City crafted a run by getting him home after a bunt and a sacrifice fly. Oh! Now we get it! That's how it's done!! <wink-wink>

The Tigers, meanwhile, were not exactly looking like the Kings of the Mountain in the batter's box. They were kept pretty much in check and had only 2 hits themselves after 7 complete innings. They had only 6 hits all night, as a matter of fact.

But in comes the Mighty Mouse (maybe that is not accurate, but he is the smallest guy on the team) and Detroit drops the Kansas City Royals to stay 5 games ahead in the AL Central standings, bringing the Magic Number finally down to №23.

Wednesday is the 3rd game of this series and it's a day game followed by another tomorrow. Detroit Prolongs Minnesota's Misery

You would never have guessed in the last 10 years that the Minnesota Twins - the ever steady contenders in the AL Central - would fall to 18 games out of first and struggling to stay out of the basement. But you let a guy like Justin Verlander take command at Target Field and what you've got is a pitcher who has already beaten you twice in the last month, won 8-in-a-row and has been the MLB Player-of-the-Month twice this year.

The statistics and the praise surrounding Justin Verlander are astounding. You can look at all of his details yourself, here. Anyone who saw this game Saturday night witnessed a good one, but not his best one. Minnesota was looking flat (and Ron Gardenhire looked flustered) and then suddenly in the bottom of the 5th inning they sprung to life with two consecutive solo home runs by Luke Hughes and Jason Repko, which was his first in the majors. Did Verlander flinch?

Maybe a little. But it did not last.

Tom Gage from The Detroit News^™ reports,"From the behavior in the Tigers' postgame clubhouse, you could tell they had won. Of course, Phil Coke and Brandon Inge were zinging a Nerf ball at each other." Go figure. We need more clowns like those two.

What has happened is that Detroit has beaten the Twins 11 games out of 14 thus far, and they play only 4 more against each other. This is what has gotten the Tigers in the driver's seat they now enjoy.

Porcello Snaps Back - Tigers Top Twins

Detroit Tames Twins 8-1 Friday Night

Brandon Inge has been spotty again since his return. But he did make a good play here and threw out Trevor Plouffe in the 5th.

The beginning of the game looked like a test of nerves, and thankfully the Tigers defense was up to the challenge. The nifty (and timely) double-play on Matt Cuddyer with a man on 1st and 3rd and one out was a beautiful relief. But Rick Porcello settled down and went on to pitch 6⅓ innings and gave up only one earned run on his way to breaking his losing skid.

Detroit maintains it's 6½ game lead in the AL Central and we can start to think about a countdown pretty soon. At this point there are 31 games left meaning the magic number is №25.

Delmon Young made his first appearance back in Minnesota and promptly had 3 RBI's on 3 singles and made sure that everyone knew he was definitely now a Detroit Tiger. He and Victor Martinez's 4 RBI's combined for 7 of the 8 runs which pushed the limping Twinsies back 17 games out of first - a place they are totally unfamiliar with.

☑ Game two of this weekend series is Saturday afternoon and we'll all be at CUBS' AC watching the action on the big screens enjoying Happy Hour and gobbling down some of that luscious Shepherd's Pie which is waiting back in the kitchen.

Three out of Four 'Aint Bad

Tigers Hang On and Beat Tampa Thursday 2-0

Jim Leyland could not be any more pleased. Even though the Detroit Tigers have actually fared well against AL East teams this year (18-14 with only 4 left against Baltimore), it never hurts to poke their eyes out a few more times. In the case of the Thursday afternoon contest in Tampa Bay, it was a black and blue-eyed Devil Ray going blind.

Doug Fister got the start and his 3rd win as a Tiger. Battling Tampa's best pitcher, Jeremy Hellickson, he pitched 7 innings and only gave up 5 hits and struck out 5. He is loving it. The run support he got the last time out was not there - so Fister stepped up and pitched a whale of a game to mow down the Tampa Bay faithful almost all by himself.

Let's give a little credit to Austin Jackson, as well. After all, the Tiger center-fielder (who has been making it easier not to miss Curtis Granderson) had both RBI's.

The Tigers are jetting up to the Twin Cities Friday night and taking on division rival Minnesota in what will be an interesting game. After all of the noise Jim Thome made for the Twins in Detroit 2 weeks ago, we won't see him there. He has been traded to Cleveland in a last-ditch attempt by the Indians to make a run for the division title. However - we'll all be at CUBS' AC watching the game on the big screens and eating something you can't get anywhere else in the world, namely the CUBS' Stadium Burger.

Tuesday night in Tampa with Detroit on top of the Rays 2-1.

The Detroit Tigers have played the Tampa Bay Rays the same way this whole season - by winning the game despite the odds. On a night when manager Jim Leyland decides to give his regular closers the day off, in steps Phil Coke in his new role and he promptly brought smiles after his performance. The bullpen was left rather short, after all - Albequerque is still on the DL and with the regulars resting - it looked like it might be a little scary.

Brad Penny started the game and pitched very well again for 6⅓ innings. Then, Schlereth faced 3 and gave up a walk and Perry faced one. But Phil Coke was the guy who stepped in and got his first save. That means the Tigers preserved their perfect campaign against Tampa Bay by winning all 5 games thus far. And there are only 2 more with Tampa this season. Today and tomorrow. In fact there are only 6 more games against the AL East and 4 of those are against the cellar-dweller Baltimore Orioles.

There was drama. But it did not come from Papa Grandé this time. Alex Avila had another multi-hit night and we watched the Angels come back and tip the White Sox so together the numbers show Detroit alone at the top and ahead by 6 full games.

Tigers Win in Tampa - Verlander Gets #19

Actually, the Tigers have been doing well against the Rays so far this whole year, 4-0. So why were the baseball pundits surprised after Monday's game? Was it only because Tampa Bay has given fits to the Red Sox and Yankees? They sure don't seem like a 69-57 team when they play Detroit. The Tigers are now sporting a 69-58 record themselves - maybe that's it.

The game started out with Justin Verlander spoon-feeding Matt Joyce an 0-2 pitch that he parked in the deep right-center seats for a solo home run which brought the fans to their feet. But it didn't stay that way for long. Alex Avila cranked his 15^th homer in the second inning to put Detroit on top for good, and Verlander got in the groove and mowed down 8 Tampa batters with strikeouts that he made look easy. It's amazing to watch him work. That Cy Young Award is looking more and more likes it needs a shave, just like Justin Verlander does!

Detroit out-hit Tampa Bay 9-6 and totally deflated their starter Jeff Niemann who had been on a 7-0 hot streak. New Tiger Delmon Young had 2 RBI's and raised his average in Detroit to .333 and Jhonny Peralta also hit a clutch 2-run RBI in the 8th to raise his average to a major league 20^th best .308.

Alex Avila was hit yet again in the jaw by a tipped ball and we all choked up for a minute.

Detroit has now built it's largest lead in the AL Central at 5½ games over both Cleveland and Chicago. We are getting excited here at CUBS' AC and not only because of the baseball games lately - we are diving into a healthy Tropical Salad from the kitchen and watching the game Tuesday night on the big screens!

Just what the Doctor ordered. Knock down number two, throw a perfect strike from center field to home plate and stand tall. All this after a tense, but exciting game Sunday afternoon in Comerica Park where the game ends on a double-play preventing a bases-loaded meltdown from happening in the 9th.

Austin Jackson for President!! Okay. Not yet.

There are still a few to play and the only guarantee we really have is that the Tigers cannot lose 100 games this year. But we are getting closer to capturing the Cy Young for our Justin Verlander - possibly sewing that up this week - and while the Detroit Tigers will have their hands full in Tampa starting Monday evening, they will also be feasting on Kansas City and Minnesota going down this stretch and that could wrap up the campaign in September.

What is that I smell coming from the kitchen? It's another slate of fantastic Specials at CUBS' AC where the real sports fans know the secret is in the taste and the game is on the big screens and the frosty beverages are flowing profusely.*

You know.....it looked like it might be a stormy night around supper-time. And was it ever! Brandon Inge hits his 2^nd home run of the year in his first at-bat and Avila and Santiago got in the spirit of things with extra-base hits, too.

Inge was not done, however. He hit a 400 foot over-the-wall ground rule double to center in his 2^nd at-bat in the 3^rd inning scoring Cabrera for another RBI.

Before it was over Detroit was spinning heads and up by 9 runs, taking another whole game lead ahead of Cleveland in the American League Central standings. The Tigers put up a total of 13 hits and the war-drums were rumbling.

Tigers starter Doug Fister got plenty of run support for the first time this year (most of his work being wasted in Seattle) spreading 6 hits over 7 complete innings striking out 7 with only 1 walk.

So, Sunday afternoon Detroit looks to sweep the Cleveland Indians and make their worst nightmares come true by building the largest lead in the standings at 4½ games. We'll all be at CUBS' AC sitting in air-conditioned comfort watching the action on the big screens while enjoying a few frosty beverages ☃! It's all happening during Happy Hour, so it won't cost you so much wampum!

You Can't Have One Without The Other

not to be outdone by Jhonny Peralta who followed suit on the next.

The weather outside was not frightful. The Tigers as hosts were not delightful. They scalped the Cleveland Indians Friday night and sent their best pitcher, Josh Tomlin, down with two quick hatchet chops. When you are playing ball like this there is no chance you are going to miss the big dance.

The Boys from Motown are not known this year to be the most productive run scoring team, but on this night they got 4 runs on 8 hits.

"My arm feels great right now," said Detroit starter Max Scherzer, who got an extra day of rest after throwing 120 pitches in his last appearance. "I had all my pitches working tonight, even my slider, which I can't usually throw that much against a left-handed lineup." Good thing, too. The Indians were held to 5 hits.

Cleveland could have taken over the division lead with a sweep of this three-game weekend series, but with Scherzer's pitching and three Detroit homers it means that chance is gone and they find themselves 2½ games back once again.

These two are at it early Saturday evening, but we are going to be staying out of the heat and the likely stormy weather tucked safely inside of CUBS' AC enjoying the perfectly climate-controlled and smoke-free atmosphere watching all the action on the big screens and sampling the Big 11 Burger Collection.

Twins Take Game and Series in Detroit

A normally much more jubilant José Valverde bobbles the bunt for an error and goes
on to take the loss and avoids ruining his perfect record of saved games.

Going down the stretch is not going to be easy. This is what Jim Leyland has been saying all along. Just ask José Valverde. The Tigers had every chance to win this one ~ they out-hit the Twins 12 to 10 ~ they loaded the bases twice for naught ~ but the Minnesota Twins countered with several highlight-reel defensive plays and came out on top.

Errors by both José Valverde and Wilson Betemit in the top of the 9th did it.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Indians woke up in Chicago and moved a game up on Detroit in the standings. There are only 4 games out of our division in the next 26 and the Tigers better get on the stick. Speaking of which - did you realize Jim Thome has more home runs in his last 2 games in Detroit than both Inge and Ordoñez have combined for the whole year?

Thursday is a day off for Detroit. I'm talking about the baseball team, not the 500,000 jobless in the State. This is the calm before the storm, as they say.

We'll be at CUBS' A.C. Friday night - if we are not one of the lucky ones sitting on the Party Bus - still trying to finish off that plate of Spaghetti and Meatballs from Wednesday evening and watching the game on the big screens.

One night after Jim Thome made his splash, Detroit was hitting on all cylinders again and won for the 9th time in 11 games against Minnesota this season. They extended their lead in the AL Central standings to 3 games again courtesy of the Indians who lost an extra innings game to the White Sox earlier in the day.

This may be getting routine with Justin Verlander. But it certainly is not getting boring.

Young In - Ordoñez Out

A bunch of folks wanted to see the Tigers win, but
they watched history in the making instead.

Actually, we would have rather liked to see more from this game instead of just nice, fuzzy memories for Twins fans. On the day Magglio Ordoñez gets platooned and Delmon Young introduces himself to a Tigers uniform, hitting a home run in his first at-bat, Detroit comes up short on the scoreboard 9-6.

You can credit Jim Thome. The new man in the 600 Club hit TWO home runs. His second hit was a 3-run shot off Daniel Schlereth in the 7th inning that propelled Minnesota to the win. Let's hear it! Yeah.

And Maggs is now seeing the writing on the wall. The man the Detroit Tigers held on to for so long for in the number 3 slot has not been able to get any closer to his career batting average than 50 percentage points under and now he is looking at retirement.

The Tigers are now only 2 games ahead of Cleveland, and remember there are a lot of games in the next stretch against AL Central foes only.

Tigers Rally Behind Scherzer

Detroit Wins Again 6-5

Max Scherzer was hit for 5 runs in the 2nd inning, including this 2-run
home run by Vladimir Guerrero. He did not give up, though.

It did not start out very pretty in Baltimore Saturday night. Detroit only had a single by Martinez and no score going into the 4th inning. Then the light bulb suddenly went on!

After scoring 1 in the top of the 4th inning the Tigers went on a consecutive 6-hit tear in the 6th to overtake the Orioles and ruin Buck Showalter's evening. Their starting pitcher, Jeremy Guthrie, squandered home runs by rookie Blake Davis who hit his career first with a 3-run smack that was followed by another 2-run dinger by Guerrero. But Scherzer hung in there and got his 12th win.

Jim Leyland looked worried at the beginning. It was not pretty at all. The Tigers had 2 on with none out in the 2nd and got nothing for it after Peralta hit into a double-play for the second night in-a-row.

Cleveland blew through the Twins at home again and this means the Tigers barely hung on to the 3-game lead in the AL Central.

The Tigers will go for the sweep and Doug Fister will be on the mound again Sunday afternoon. We'll all be at CUBS' AC watching it on the big screens, savoring our favorite beverages as usual!

Unsung Heroes Come Through

Andy Dirks was 4 for 4 with this double to push the Detroit Tigers to the win
despite a well played game by the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

Sometimes it's the Tigers whom we rarely see in the headlines who can pick up the whole team. Like Andy Dirks who hit the game-winning RBI. And let's not forget Wilson Betemit who homered and had 3 hits himself improving to a .347 average since coming to the Motor City.

It was a change for Brad Penny, too. He finally got some offensive support and wins for the 8th time this year in a hard fought game in front of a sparse 21,465 in Baltimore. The Tigers combined for 15 hits - though scoring only 5 runs.

This preserved the 3 game lead Detroit has in the standings over the Indians who rallied to hold off Minnesota at home.

These two tie it up again Saturday evening as Max Scherzer takes the mound in an attempt to get his 12th win. We'll all be watching on the big screens at CUBS' AC while devouring Meditteranean Nachos with Tzatziki sauce which sounds pretty interesting.

Verlander Gets It Done - Wins #17

Tigers Snap Streak - Win Finale 4-3

The first 17 game winner in the major leagues is none other than our own Cy Young candidate Detroit Tiger pitcher Justin Verlander. A career 100th victory is now in the books for him. There were 10 strikeouts by Verlander against a very potent and hungry Indians squad who did score 3 runs on 2 good extra base plays but got only 3 total hits.

All in all, the Indians pick up a game on Detroit after taking 2 of 3 in this series and these two teams will meet again 10 more times before the season is over. The progressive Field jinx is broken, however. Detroit had not won a game here since May last year.

When you have to win you find a way. Austin Jackson has found his niche, and the batting order, though changing constantly, seems to come through in the pinch. There was even a squeeze bunt play Thursday night by the Tigers in the 1st inning. A fun game to watch. Much more fun when you win.

The Tigers go on the road to Baltimore Friday night, where they are only 1-2 so far this season against the AL East cellar dwellers. We'll all be at CUBS' AC watching the game on the big screens - even over the lanes during Lucky Pin Days - and taking a break between frames to get a bite out of a Gyro Wrap.

Cleveland Creams Tigers 10-3

by Jim Leyland in the 4th inning after 11 hits given up.

The Cleveland Indians tied a season best with 7 doubles Wednesday night. That amounted to only 7 of the 18 hits they got from 3 Detroit pitchers - the most were from a tired and scared looking starter, Rick Porcello, however.

The mid-season trades brought a hot pitcher to the Indians in Ubaldo Jiménez from Colorado, and his first appearance was a beauty - if you're a Cleveland fan. Ho smothered the Tigers and gave up only 6 hits and 3 runs in 8 complete innings.

We are in the middle of a playoff race and this was the 3rd loss in-a-row for Detroit and the wrong bunch of guys to start tripping in front of now. The Tigers face AL Central foes in all but 6 of the next 30 games.

Detroit will try to avoid being swept for the 2nd time this season at Progressive Field Thursday evening, and we'll all be at CUBS' AC watching it on the big screens and wolfing down on some of those Big 11 Burgers from the Collection.

Tigers Lose a Long, Weird One in Cleveland

Storm clouds rolled in from Lake Erie and the game was delayed in the 2nd inning.
After 7 long hours the game ended on a hit batter well after midnight.

This was not the way to open a series against the second place team chasing you down the final stretch. Give credit where credit is due, but this one was just plain rotten luck.

Can you believe these statistics? There was a total of 15 different pitchers who appeared (8 for the Indians and 7 for the Tigers) and a total of 439 pitches were thrown between the two. Doug Fister was keeping it close after the Tigers tied it up in the 2nd inning and then came the rain.

It all ended in the 14th on a bases-loaded, hit-by-pitch thrown by Detroit reliever David Pauley who hit Kosuke Fukudome on the left arm to force in Asdrubal Cabrera. Darn it if that is not bad luck. Just darn it. Cleveland is 4-0 at home against Detroit this season with all four coming in the final at-bat - three on walkoffs.

It was nearly 2am Wednesday morning when the game ended and these two will be at it again Wednesday evening for more. We'll all be at CUBS' AC watching it on the big screens while chomping down on some of that Sweet Baby Ray's^® Chicken Salad.

A Royal Pain - Jeff Francoeur

Tigers Come Up Short 4-3

A great throw by our new arch-nemesis in Kansas City, Jeff Francoeur,
catches Jhonny Peralta short of a steal and likely saved the game for the Royals.

It was not really expected that it would be so easy to sweep the Royals at home, but with the Tigers 6th inning surge getting cut short by a classic weather "midwest roller" it was made worse by the play of one Jeff Francoeur.

The Kansas City right-fielder was a pest this whole series on both sides of the ball. An absolutely perfect throw from right field by Francoeur cut short the Tigers rally as the tag was put on Peralta. Not to mention, the steady play of South Lyon's own Mitch Maier made trouble, too.

The end result of Max Scherzer's effort to win #11 was that Detroit came up short. Bruce Chen was handling the Tigers pretty well up until the weather spurt - but the winds were not going Detroit's way this time. So we take 2 out of 3. That's a winning combination if you can guarantee it the rest of the way and the Indians continue to lose in parallel.

Speaking of which - the Tigers travel to Cleveland Tuesday evening to take on the Indians face-to-face and this should just about shape up the rest of the season. So be here at CUBS' AC if you are not going to Progressive Field yourself and join us as we watch it on the big screens.

Detroit Takes Game Two 4-3

The Detroit Tigers avoided a meltdown and Justin Verlander got his 16th win of the season by offsetting defensive gaffs in return. None other than Ryan Raburn threw the ball in an attempt to cut-off a runner between second and third base but the ball sailed well above everybody's reach to go out of bounds and a run was allowed which nearly spoiled the effort.

Instead, Cy Young candidate Verlander was rewarded with a league-lead tying victory while CC Sabathia was losing badly in Boston.

It looked like Saturday was going to be a cake-walk for the Tigers when they got 2 runs up before the Royals ever stood at home plate in the blistering 100°+ temperature in Kansas City. But keeping things interesting, the #5, 6, 7 & 8 batters from KC produced some clutch hits to stay close in the game.

Max Scherzer is scheduled to pitch Sunday afternoon for the finale of this series and the Tigers will be looking to sweep the Royals and keep their 4 game lead in the standings. We'll all be at CUBS' AC sitting in air conditioned comfort watching the game on the big screens.

Tigers Take Opener in KC 4-3 in 10

For a team loaded with suspect relievers you would think that using five pitchers in 10 innings was a bad sign. Phil Coke was perfect again Friday (unfortunately) - giving up 1 for 1. David Pauley was twice as good at 1 for 2. Daniel Schlereth was perfect for 2 complete innings. But José Valverde gets a win where Rick Porcello gets cheated. It was the 7th that got to him, and that was a shame.

Credit the Detroit bats again for this one, however. Brennan Boesch comes up with a clutch hit in the 10th and the Tigers take this one from the pesky Royals.

How about 2 triples in the opening frame? You heard me right. Back-to-back triples by Jackson and Boesch got the Royals on their heels quickly. But truly, despite being outhit, the Tigers and Rick Porcello were fine overall and the infield defense seemed to show up on time for a change.

Saturday evening is going to be a good one to watch on the big screens at CUBS' AC. Justin Verlander is on the mound and he is only 7 strikeouts away from tying Denny McClain's record for 9th place on the all-time list. We are going to be sitting in air conditioned comfort while chomping down on a great CUBS' AC creation - the Philly Cheese Steak Pizza!

Texas Handles Penny in Finale

By close we mean on the triple play we should have gotten. Darn near perfect until Martinez dropped the ball at home. Instead, a run scored that should not have and the tide went back in Texas' favor. Consequently, the Rangers win the finale of this series 5-2.

Brad Penny was again dependable, but the Texas Rangers are scrappy and when Elvis Andrus is on first base you have to keep him from slipping all the way around - he'll find a way to score.

Texas only had 2 more hits than Detroit but they were able to convert more of them into runs. This breaks their short losing streak, but also prevented an embarrassing sweep at Comerica Park. Detroit does take the season series with Texas, however, 6-3.

Thursday was gorgeous and the Detroit Tigers got their 3rd sellout within a week. On a day game, no less. That either means there are too many out of work who can still afford tickets or that the Tigers are just too popular to pass up.

The Tigers are off to Kansas City Friday night. They will try to keep the overall momentum going in the right direction as we head into the last stretch of the season and hold onto top spot in the division. We'll all be at CUBS' AC watching the game on the big screens and sampling some of those Big 11 Burgers.

Get 'er done. That is what the Detroit Tigers are doing so much differently this year.

Detroit's recent acquisition of starting pitcher Doug Fister from Seattle paid off in his Tiger debut as he won for the first time in the last 10 starts without walking a batter. In fact, 73 of his 99 pitches were for strikes, and he had no strikeouts, either. When he needed to he just got outs.

Meanwhile, Boston rallied to beat the Indians and the Tigers extended their lead in the AL Central standings to a full 4 games - the most so far this season.

Brad Penny is taking the mound in the series finale Thursday afternoon and we are gathering to see it on the big screens at CUBS' AC in Ann Arbor while enjoying a Play Me a Tuna Melt. (Hope it's not playing take me out to the ballgame, 'cause we got it here!)

Tigers Take Game 1 From Texas

This is why we Love baseball. The Ups and Downs. Well.....admittedly it's mostly the Ups.

In the fleeting spurts of rain and umbrellas and oohs and aahs the Detroit Tigers showed some mettle to the AL West leading Texas Rangers and came out the winners Tuesday night 6-5.

With Brennan Boesch hitting an 8th inning solo HR (the game-winner) after Joaquin Benoit nearly gave away the farm, the Tiger fans who toughed out the humid and rainy night were finally rewarded.

Max Scherzer started the game but came away with another no decision, while Benoit - despite tying the game with generous gifts to Rangers hitting - captured the win. This one pushes the Tigers into a 3 game lead in the standings - the biggest thus far.

Weather permitting, we'll be at CUBS' AC again Wednesday evening to take in game two of this series. Of course, the game at CUBS' AC is on the BIG screens and not too far from the kitchen where this week's Specials are waiting.

Tigers Entertain Another Sold Out Crowd and Win

Justin Verlander continues to amaze us. He pitched perfect ball until the 8th inning
and then it seemed like the wheels fell off the cart. It was not all his fault, though.

This was probably the most screwed up run-down in the history of baseball
since Abner Doubleday. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

How can a guy pitch so brilliantly for 7 hot innings and then simply go deaf and dumb? If you were at Comerica Park or even at CUBS' AC watching on the big screens you saw exactly how that is possible.

We got a split with the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday which is O.K., but we also showed the "clown" side of a team which has got to get more serious at this point in the season. We hope this new blood coming in after the trades will bring some sanity.

Tempers flared and the Angels' Jered Weaver even got thrown out of the game for having a bad attitude. That was something which everybody could literally feel coming. Carlos Guillen stood tall and taunted Weaver after he hit his dinger in the bottom of the 7th and it was off to the races.

Too bad that a "brat attitude" seems to be the way to elevate popularity and prop up attendance anymore. Is it necessary??

We've got a one day break on Monday and then it's back to the grind at Woodward Avenue (actually Witherell and E. Adams and Montcalm) when the Tigers take on Texas and we are going to see it LIVE on the big screens at CUBS' AC.

C(h)oke Is Not It Again

Rookie Holds His Own - Phil C(h)oke Does It Again

Before a sold-out Comerica Park, Brennan Boesch
and Phil C(h)oke showed little to shout about, as the
Los Angeles Angels won easily 5-1 Saturday afternoon.

Whoops does not cut it. The Tigers made a 5-way trade deal before the game Saturday in an effort to tune-up for the pennant run and it did not look like it made much difference. Jacob Turner made his major league debut for Detroit and only gave up 2 runs and 3 hits in 5⅓ innings, but Phil C(h)oke gave up a run by hitting a batter with the bases loaded (a new low) and the Angels sailed on to win.

Dan Haren was 2 for 2 against the Tigers in July - both were complete games - and pitched a truly incredible 0.50 ERA which really was only fun to see it if you are an Angels fan. The Tiger bats were missing in action against him.

Meanwhile, the whole baseball world is looking for a whale of a match-up Sunday afternoon with whom are arguably two of the best pitchers in the American League going up against each other - Jered Weaver and Justin Verlander.

This one cannot be missed. That is why we'll all be at CUBS' AC watching it on the big screens and trying once more to finish off that platter of BBQ Ribs.

White Sox Take Finale 2-1

Mac Scherzer surrendered the career first home run to Alejandro De Aza, which was a 2-run blast that held through as the game-winner and series clincher for the White Sox. Despite striking out 8, he allowed Adam Dunn aboard 4 times (a travesty) and without much help from the rest of the Tigers who again somehow avoided crossing home plate, he takes his 6th loss and 2nd of three against Chicago.

It is amazing to watch the first two Tigers get aboard with no outs and they manage to come up with a goose egg, anyway. If L.O.B. (left-on-base) statistics were more prominent and counted for something other than rotten luck the Detroit Tigers would be making regular trips to a Swiss bank.

You know how we feel about Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen. He came up with this quote full of wisdom, " In the right place at the right time. " Oh.............please. I prefer to say White Sox starter John Danks pitched a great game, striking out 10 and giving up only 6 hits, and that our middle reliever - the demoted Phil Coke - pitched 2 for 2. Two batters. Two walks.

So, the White Sox make up a game on the division leading Tigers after this road-trip concludes. It could have been worse. We'll see how much we have left for guts now when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim come to Comerica Park for a 4 game series starting Thursday afternoon.
